HOUSTON (AP) — Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud was selected by the Houston Texans with the second overall pick in the NFL draf t Thursday night as the team addressed its most glaring need.Stroud was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes where he threw for 8,123 yards with 85 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions as Ohio State went 21-4. Stroud joins a team that has failed to find a reliable quarterback in the two seasons since Deshaun Watson requested a trade before being traded to the Cleveland Browns. Davis Mills has started most of the last two seasons, going 5-22-1 in 28 games with 26 starts as the Texans sunk to among the NFL’s worst teams. Stroud becomes the third quarterback Houston has selected in the first round, joining Watson, taken 12th in 2017 and David Carr, the team’s first draft pick who was the top overall pick in 2002. The Texans hired former player DeMeco Ryans to coach the team this offseason as they try to turn things around after winning just 11 games combined ...

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani earned another win on the mound despite giving up five runs in a nightmare fourth inning, and he also tripled, doubled and singled in the Los Angeles Angels’ 8-7 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.Ohtani (4-0) had his rockiest start in recent memory, yielding at least five runs and two homers for the first time in 18 starts since last July while also hitting a career-high three batters with pitches.Nearly all of the two-way superstar’s trouble occurred in the fourth, after he had thrown three perfect innings. Ohtani’s struggles were preceded by a breakdown in his PitchCom system, which he uses in lieu of traditional catcher-to-pitcher signals, but both Ohtani and manager Phil Nevin said those problems weren’t the main factor while Ohtani allowed seven baserunners, threw two wild pitches and lost a 5-0 lead.“He’s human,” Nevin said. “I kind of had to go up and down the dugout after the next half-inning, because it was...

4 Boston police officers acquitted in overtime pay scam case

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:08:47 GMT

Four Boston police officers were acquitted Thursday in a case linked to what prosecutors had described as an overtime pay scam. Timothy Torigian, Robert Twitchell, Henry Doherty and Kendra Conway were initially charged in 2020 along with five other officers. Charges were dropped against one officer, while four others pleaded guilty. The Department of Justice announced new charges in February of this year through a superseding indictment against Torigian, Twitchell, Doherty and Conway. The officers were accused of collectively embezzling more than $200,000 in overtime pay for hours they did not work.Lawyers for Torigian, Twitchell, Doherty and Conway told jurors they didn’t dispute the officers were paid for overtime hours they didn’t work. They said, though, that officers were also just following longstanding overtime procedures accepted by the Boston Police Department. The jury ultimately found the officers not guilty on conspiracy and fraud charges.

How Lamar Jackson went from demanding to be traded to landing a lucrative 5-year deal with the Ravens

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:08:47 GMT

How did we get here? It’s a question that 56 days ago had a drastically different meaning than it does now. On March 2, Lamar Jackson told the Ravens that he wanted to be traded. Now he’s the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL in terms of average annual salary after agreeing to a five-year extension with Baltimore worth a reported $260 million, including $185 million guaranteed.“For the last few months there’s been a lot of he say, she say, a lot of nail-biting, a lot of head scratching going on,” Jackson said in a video message posted to the Ravens’ social media account shortly after the news broke. “But for the next five years, there’s a lot of ‘Flock’ going on.”How things went from a two-years-long stalemate over a long-term contract to a smiling Jackson in the back seat of a Bentley might seem surprising, but there were breadcrumbs along the way, starting with how the Ravens reacted when Jackson revealed his trade...

Chicago Bears trade down again and select Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright with the No. 10 pick in the NFL draft

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:08:47 GMT

The Chicago Bears have a new offensive tackle after selecting Tennessee’s Darnell Wright with the No. 10 pick in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night in Kansas City, Mo.Before the Bears took Wright, general manager Ryan Poles traded back one spot with the Philadelphia Eagles, who selected Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter at No. 9. The Bears gained a 2024 fourth-round pick in the trade. The Bears needed an offensive tackle to play opposite Braxton Jones, who started every game at left tackle in his rookie season in 2022. Quarterback Justin Fields was sacked 55 times last season, and part of building a roster that will help Fields elevate his game is shoring up the protection for him.In the 6-foot-5, 333-pound Wright, they have a player who has prototypical size and an aggressive style. He started 42 games over four seasons at Tennessee and was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2022. Some draft analysts believe he is a plug-and-play starter at right tackle.NFL Net...
